The Sewer Thermal Energy Network (STEN) Announces Ken Smith Joins Board of Directors

STEN is pleased to announce that Ken Smith, PE, MBA has been welcomed as the newest member of our Board of Directors. Ken's commitment to the board of STEN represents an expansion of STEN expertice, geographic reach and experience. Ken has decades of experience in district energy, long history with sewage thermal energy and he not only represents the midwest but also another connection to the EU via Germany.  STEN is an international organization and Ken strengthens that claim. 


Ken is a currently serving as a Senior Advisor at Ever-Green Energy after serving 14 years as its CEO. Under his leadership, Ever-Green Energy tripled in size and expanded from Saint Paul to operating district energy systems in five states, and has provided consulting on advancement and development of energy systems in over U.S. 40 communities.


A fellow at the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment, Ken has been globally recognized for his leadership in energy efficiency and campus and community scale energy systems, and is co-founder of the highly acclaimed Climate Smart Municipalities exchange between Minnesota and Germany.


Prior to joining Ever-Green in 2006, he worked for over 20 years planning, designing, and implementing energy projects globally for a variety of mission critical facilities for high tech industry, international airports and the U.S. Department of Defense.


As the current chair of the board of trustees for the Science Museum of Minnesota, Ken has served on the boards of several companies and not-for-profits, chairing the boards for the International District Energy Association, the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce, and Clean Counts (fka the Midwest Renewable Energy Tracking System or M-RETS).


In 2022 Ken received the prestigious Norman R. Taylor Award from the International District Energy Association for his industry leadership and lifelong commitment to energy efficiency and sustainable energy solutions. In 2024 he was recognized as a Most Admired CEO by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal. Ken has an MBA from the University of St. Thomas, a BS in electrical engineering from North Dakota State University, and is a registered professional engineer in several states.
