On Thursday, September 17, 2026, Chairman of STEN, Paul Kohl, attended a celebration at the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy where John Kerry, former Secretary of State and Presidential Climate Envoy, won this year’s Carnot Prize. This is an annual prize issued to people who have made major contributions to energy policy through scholarship or practical leadership. It was a lovely ceremony held at the University of Pennsylvania Museum in Philadelphia, PA. Kerry received the honor for his long-standing work in climate diplomacy, helping secure the Paris Agreement, and driving international and domestic clean energy transitions. As I sat next to two students, one a freshman looking into energy policy and a first-year law student who worked for an environmental non-profit after graduation from Duke, I felt so much hope and potential.
Elements of John Kerry’s speech really resonated. “These alternatives are already the most economically compelling choice. And the deficit we face today is not a deficit of ingenuity, not a deficit of entrepreneurial skill and capacity by our citizens. It is a deficit of willpower.”
He said “I am convinced of this, we will be a low carbon, no carbon economy in this century. We will get there in time to avoid the worst consequences of what can and will happen to the planet.” He ended this with words of hope, that even though it seems like we are moving backwards, “The world changes fastest precisely when people assume it can’t.”
STEN agrees with these statements and endeavors to
expand the marketplace for Sewage Thermal Energy by encouraging the willpower it takes to develop such projects. Let’s change the world - let’s expand our ability to recycle energy by reclaiming the heat in our sewage.
